Research partner
University of New South Wales
Hydro2050 is engaging with Dr Naras Hanumanth Rao, ARC DECRA Fellow and Senior Associate in the Algae and Organic Matter Laboratory, on oxidising cyanobacterial toxins.
The laboratory and the work
What is being investigated
Four lines of enquiry are open:
- Oxidation of cyanobacterial toxins using ozone and nanobubble technologies
- Treatment of harmful algal bloom by-products
- Advanced treatment approaches for improving water safety
- Understanding mechanisms for toxin degradation in affected water bodies
Why this work matters to Hydro2050
It contributes to the growing body of knowledge around treatment technologies capable of addressing one of Australia's most significant emerging water quality challenges: harmful algal blooms and the toxin risks that come with them.
That is the problem the Lake Albert project was brought in to solve, and it is what the case studies on cyanobacteria and Karenia measure.
The other three partners
Adelaide University and Monash University.
Advanced oxidation and PFAS at Adelaide University's SIRM, and algal bloom mitigation at Monash.
