Drinking water

Safe drinking water is a standing problem for many remote and regional communities, where the source can carry algae, bacteria, organic contamination, poor taste, odours and low oxygen. Hydro treats it without adding chemicals.

What the unit does, and where it fits

Chemical-free treatment

Hydro combines nanobubbles, oxygen, ozone and advanced oxidation to produce clean, safe water of a quality suitable for drinking water treatment.

It generates oxygen and ozone from the atmosphere and delivers them into the water through trillions of ultrafine nanobubbles. That creates highly reactive hydroxyl radicals which disinfect the water, oxidise contaminants and remove odours, with no hazardous chemicals to transport or store.

Ozone was endorsed as a disinfectant for the treatment of drinking water by the NHMRC in 2005, and it is widely used in Europe for drinking water sanitation. It oxidises metals and organic compounds, including algal toxins, taste and odour.

What comes out of the water

Metals in solution

Oxidised and crystallised, so they can be filtered out of the water.

Suspended solids

Raised to the surface by bubble buoyancy to be skimmed, which clarifies the water.

Biofilm in pipes

Removed. Biofilm creates blockages in pipes and fittings.

Where it fits in the treatment train

Hydro is compatible with multiple barrier potable water processes. It does a specific job in the train, and the drinking water standard is met by the train rather than by one box in it.

1. Pre-treatment

Removes impurities and particles.

2. Hydro ozonation

Water sanitation, and taste and odour removal.

3. Biological activated carbon

Removes organic by-products.

4. Chlorination

Residual disinfection.

5. Storage and distribution

Out to the community.

There is one case study on this side of the business, oxidising iron in water using nanobubble ozonation. Dissolved ferrous iron at three concentrations was reduced by 91.4%, 91.4% and 96% after treatment, settling and filtration. No testing laboratory is named against those results.

Key benefits

Safe drinking water

Hydro assists in the destruction of bacteria, viruses, pathogens and organic contaminants through advanced oxidation, for cleaner and safer supply.

Odour and taste improvement

Ozone oxidation breaks down the compounds responsible for unpleasant tastes and odours, producing fresher, more palatable drinking water.

Mobile and remote deployment

Fixed or mobile, which suits isolated communities, mining camps, Indigenous communities, emergency response and remote agricultural operations.

Chemical-free operation

Hydro generates its treatment gases from the atmosphere, so there is nothing hazardous to transport, store or handle.

Environmentally sustainable

The technology improves water quality while leaving a minimal environmental footprint. It is energy efficient and can be powered by solar and battery.

Improved water security

Treating lower-quality sources and supporting reuse helps a community become more resilient and less dependent on transported water.

One case study

Oxidising iron in water using nanobubble ozonation.

A Hydro2050 trial, and the smallest of the four groups. Ferrous iron reduced by up to 96%, with no laboratory named against the result.
